How to Get a Prototype Made in Chattanooga

If you have an idea for a physical product, a working prototype is the first real step toward selling it. This guide walks inventors and startups through how ProtoProof takes a product from a sketch or CAD file to a working prototype, and then to a first production run, from Chattanooga, TN.

You don’t need an engineering background or finished drawings to start. Most projects follow the same six steps.

1. Share Your Idea Under a Mutual NDA

Start with whatever you have: a rough sketch, a set of drawings, or CAD files in .STEP, .F3D or .sldprt format. We review everything under a mutual NDA, so your idea stays protected from the first conversation.

If you’re starting from a problem rather than a design, describe the problem. The point of this step is to understand what the part needs to do, where it will be used and what it will eventually be made from.

If they matter for your part, mention constraints like operating temperatures, tolerances or biocompatibility early. They shape every decision that follows.

2. Design: CAD Modeling and a DFM Review

Next, we turn the idea into a 3D CAD model. Alongside the modeling we run a design-for-manufacturing (DFM) review, which checks the part’s geometry, material shrinkage and thermal expansion so it can actually be produced at scale.

Catching those issues in CAD costs far less than finding them after production tooling has been made.

We model in Fusion 360, Solidworks, Rhino and CREO, and simulate part interfaces early to save time and capital on redundant prototypes.

3. Prototype: 3D Printing or CNC Machining

With the design in place, we build the prototype with 3D printing or CNC machining, depending on the part. Functional parts are delivered in days, and prototype materials are matched to your production requirements, so what you test behaves like what you’ll eventually sell.

Precision prototype parts can hold tolerances down to +/- 0.0005 inches, so fit and function are tested against real numbers.

For the details, see our 3D printing and rapid prototyping services.

4. Test and Refine: Fit, Function and Durability

A prototype is only useful once it’s tested. We check fit, function and durability, then adjust dimensions and geometry until the part performs the way it needs to. This step can repeat as many times as the design needs.

5. Validate: A Short Run Before Production Tooling

Before you pay for production tooling, test the market. A short run, such as a 30-unit batch, puts real parts in customers’ hands so you can gather feedback and confirm demand without the cost of a production mold.

That’s how Vaucluse Gear validated its backpack frame before scaling to 20,000 injection-molded units. Read the Backpack Spacer case study.

6. Scale: Tooling, Pilot Runs and Production

Once the design and the demand are proven, we handle custom tooling, pilot runs and high-volume production through our vendor network, including local Tennessee manufacturers. Working with nearby vendors cuts shipping delays and keeps production close to home.

If you already have pre-orders waiting, line-side pickups of partial batches can get parts to customers before the full run is finished. For Vaucluse Gear, shipping parts straight off the line with Pocketship Logistics saved six weeks of waiting.

What to Bring to Your First Conversation

Bring whatever you have: a sketch, photos, drawings or CAD files, a short description of what the part needs to do, and a rough idea of how many units you expect to need eventually. If you don’t know some of that yet, that’s fine; working it out is part of the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need a CAD File?

No. You can start from a rough sketch or a description of the problem you’re trying to solve. We create the CAD model as part of the design step.

Will You Sign an NDA?

Yes. We review every project under a mutual NDA.

Ready to start? Share your sketch, drawings or CAD files and we’ll plan the next step together.
